Today’s Picks of the Week edition finds its oeuvre in the exchange wagering push in California, from Betfair and TVG’s hopes to start the fixed odds form of wagering in the United States — like yesterday already — to Churchill Downs Inc.’s request for a license that it seemingly would prefer not to have to use for months, if at all.
Churchill won’t comment about its plans or intentions beyond what is said in California Horse Racing Board meetings (and a financial note in its earnings report), and even those comments weren’t 100 percent clear for Chairman Keith Brackpool and his repeated efforts to pin down Churchill’s representative.
So, without further adieu, we offer today’s picks at Churchill Downs upon which you can back or lay as you see fit:
In honor of Brackpool’s questioning of Churchill VP Brad Blackwell (or “Bradwell,” as he once was called in a malapropism), where Brackpool noticeably sighed at one point, we’ll take Doinmysongndance in the 9th.
For Betfair’s ongoing wait still going, we’ll go with Takin the Sloroad in the 8th.
Since some say the revenues from exchange wagering will help racing while others say it’ll hurt pari-mutuel betting and its higher takeout, we’ll go with Rate Change in the 6th.
Lastly, (but actually first in program order), the selection in the 3rd, since we’re California dreaming today, has to be Bo Derek, the only CHRB member who missed this week’s meeting.
Good luck.
